Name: Ingrid Alvarez Russell
City, country you are from: Born in Bronx, NY to parents from the Dominican Republic.
Name of college and what you studied: Colgate University- BA in Spanish & Psychology; Shippensburg University of PA- M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction and a Certification in Early Childhood Education; and Lehigh University & Lehigh Carbon Intermediate Unit 21- Certification Extension for English as a Second Language.
How/Why is your work at BB meaningful to you: Teaching young children a new language not only introduces them to a new culture and language, but it also enriches their lives and opens their minds to create flexible and solid connections in the brain. It becomes an opportunity to help children build a strong, holistic foundation that opens doors in their futures.
Favorite adult band/singer in the language you teach: I love many artists as my music interests are broad. A few singers I enjoy listening to are: Prince Royce, Luis Fonsi, and Juan Luis Guerra.
Your special way of getting the children’s attention or unique teaching technique: Children’s brains are like sponges. They absorb so much information and more easily than adults. Therefore, learning at a young age will set children up for success as there are many intellectual and cognitive benefits to learning a second language, such as: better critical thinking skills, enhanced memory, and better problem solving skills, among others. Children who are bilingual are also more likely to achieve higher academic success, experience more cultural enrichment, have better linguistics in both first and second languages, and contribute to society in a more positive way. The benefits and opportunities are endless and now is the time to start!
One reason why you think learning a foreign language is important at a young age: Because you will increase your chances of making more diverse friends in the future.
Favorite part of a BB class: I truly love the developmentally appropriate curriculum offered by Bilingual Birdies. Children learn a second language engaging in the language via music and movement, total physical response, and realia. It’s truly the best way for young children to learn a second language.
